Illuminating the Road to Success

by Anvita Nadgir

The pursuit of success is often viewed as an arduous endeavour, one with innumerable obstacles and challenges. As the adage goes, “the road to success is paved with the hot asphalt of failure.” Humanity longs to illuminate the path to affluence. However, charting the path to wealth and riches is impractical, and we will never unveil the lengthy and winding road to ultimate success.

However, does this mean that success is an imaginary concept, alluring solely because it is unattainable? Perhaps not. It is simply our definition of success that requires refinement. Success is the attainment of a goal or target. We can quantifiably measure it in numerous ways, such as financial, personal, or professional accomplishments.

The beauty, however, is that success is subjective and hence doesn’t have to be so elusive. For example, a stay-at-home parent who successfully raises an all-rounded and compassionate child could consider that a personal success. Even a sole proprietor who starts a small enterprise and is able to earn a livelihood doing something they are truly passionate about could consider that a professional accomplishment. Therefore, when we make a minor alteration to our definition of success, the way we perceive our accomplishments changes radically.

So as we enter a new year, redefine what success means to you. Instead of setting intangible and unachievable goals, set reasonable targets and work on fulfilling them consistently. We all tend to over-burden ourselves with expectations, and we fail to remember that rather than the final destination, it is the experiences, learnings, and skills we pick up during the journey that are invaluable. Focus on finding fulfilment rather than getting caught up in external markers of success. And although the road to success is not illuminated, it is far more pleasing to lighten the path with your own flair!
